What are offsets?
A carbon offset is the act of reducing or sequestering greenhouse gas emissions through investment in a greenhouse gas reduction project elsewhere because you are unable to further reduce your own greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate Positive encourages all individuals and businesses to measure their carbon footprint in order to calculate the amount of greenhouse gas associated with a household or business operation. By reducing these emissions, and offsetting residual emissions through investments in renewable energy and emissions reduction projects, you can reduce your contribution to global warming.
Can offsets reduce global warming?
At any one time there are a variety of renewable energy and emissions reduction projects in the planning stage which could reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Without additional funding these projects may not be financially viable and there is no incentive for the project designers to implement their emission reduction projects.
Therefore, carbon offsets provide an additional source of funding to make these projects financially viable and get off the ground.
