What has Strategic Data done to reduce CO2 emissions?

In terms of Office Environment, Lighting and Heating Automation:

In order to optimise the use of electricity our programmers have custom designed and built a Strategic Data Office Automated System which monitors and controls all power to the office. This computerised system was developed in-house for the purpose of maximising electricity efficiently and only when necessary by:

• automatically turning off all office lighting and the air conditioner when the last employee leaves for the night;

• operating electrical lighting at the lowest power consumption.

Lighting: A number of skylights have been installed along with electronic light detectors. These installations minimise the need for full lighting by utilising natural light efficiently. For staff working outside regular hours, the system is programmed to provide only the minimum necessary lights. All lighting throughout the office is provided by efficient fluoro globes.

Heating and Cooling: Modern bats have been added to existing roof line insulation and the majority of our newly installed air conditioners are equipped with efficient inverter technology. Our Office Automation System shuts down the air conditioners once sensing the last employee has left. Current cooling levels are at 23°C.

Electricity: Our electricity is 100% renewable sourced by Red Energy (100% Australian owned).

For Staff Travel:

• Bicycle: Since the ecovantage assessment, we have installed 6 more bike racks and now house more bikes at the office car park than cars,
• Public transport: Staff that commute long distances to the office are using public transport instead of driving, and
• Work travel: Whilst we serve clients Australia-wide we prefer the use of phone and video conferencing to reduce the environmental impact of staff travel.

For Paper Use:
We minimise paper use by:

• presenting quotes and proposals electronically,
• maintaining records electronically,
• registering clients' content to receive electronic invoices,
• all faxing is operated through a computerised interface eliminating the need for paper printouts,
• all paper used by the Strategic Data is 100% recycled.

How have Strategic Data staff worked together to reduce carbon emissions?

As a group, we engage in:

• the annual Ride to Work Day,

• installing bike racks to encourage employees to leave their cars at home,

• recycling our paper, glass, plastic and aluminium into separate components,

• donating old PCs, servers and monitors for recycling with Computer Bank and Green PC,

• recycling old printer cartridges at our local Australia Post outlet, and

• recycling disused batteries.

What plans does Strategic Data have for future reductions?

We are investigating installation of solar panels to further sustain our business activities as well as researching methods of employing a heat extraction system that will remove the reliance on air conditioning to cool the server room. To reduce electricity demand, we are in the process of creating a network-wide formula to automatically put office computers and monitors in sleep mode when not in use.

Why has Strategic Data become Climate Positive?

In the process of fulfilling our social and environmental responsibilities, by becoming Climate Positive, we have also benefited by making our organisation run with more efficient and modern means. Our efforts have eradicated mountains of paper and sky-high electricity bills. Applying efficiency through small changes has benefited our company and the planet; there is every reason to become Climate Positive!

How have the emissions been offset?

We have worked with Climate Positive to offset our carbon emissions for a more sustainable approach to business and the climate. Climate Positive carefully selects offset projects that direct funds exclusively to programs intent on reducing carbon emissions and building renewable energy infrastructure. Climate Positive also believes in nurturing and recreating the natural environment by restoring ecologically diverse forests in high-carbon yield areas.
