Selection criteria
Climate Positive guarantees to source the highest quality offset product available anywhere. We have taken great care to cover all bases to ensure we meet strict environmental and social criteria.
Develops infrastructure for change
Reduction commitment
Our supporters and clients undertake a commitment to first measuring their carbon footprint, reducing this footprint, and then finally 'offsetting' their residual footprint. The reduction step is paramount, as reducing the size of our carbon footprints is essential to address global warming and climate change.
There is no single regulatory body or overarching standard accrediting the providers of voluntary carbon offsets. Consequently, Climate Positive sources offsets from a variety of project types accredited under different regulatory frameworks.
In order to select which offsets to buy, Climate Positive have developed a weighted set of criteria to ensure our offsets have the characteristics we think are important in an offset and meet the high standards expected by our supporters, clients and the public at large.
Our criteria are weighted to favour: Accredited Verified Emissions Reductions sourced from projects that prevent and reduce greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere from fossil fuel sources.
Third party accreditation
Offsets that are verified according to an independent standard are preferable to offsets that are not. This doesn't necessarily mean unaccredited offsets are an inferior product. However, it does mean that it's much easier for us to verify and report that the offset has actually occurred and satisfies additionality criteria. The use of uniform accreditation standards also builds consumer confidence in offset integrity.
Displaces fossil use
Offsets that keep carbon locked away in the fixed carbon pool reduce the total amount that needs to be removed from the atmosphere to stabilise carbon dioxide levels.
Develops infrastructure for change
Projects which install or modify infrastructure are important to help us make a transition to a low-carbon economy.
Environment and community
Serious consideration is given to assessing the environmental and community impacts of the offset project.
Transparency of ownership
Compliance schemes and projects which use ownership registries and have surrenderable certificates avoid offsets being sold multiple times and provide security of ownership.
