Safe Climate Australia launch emissions assessed, reduced & offset
Safe Climate Australia, launched on July 13 by The Hon. Al Gore, engaged Climate Positive and environmental consulting partner ecovantage to perform an emission assessment of the 1000-person event, and to offset residual emissions.
The major sources of emissions assessed by ecovantage included:
• Energy utilised to power the event space, including electricity and gas
• Transport of staff, speakers & volunteers
• Printed material and banners embodied emissions, and
• Peninsula kitchen and general waste.
The Safe Climate Australia launch resulting greenhouse gas emissions will be offset by Climate Positive, using accredited projects with a renewable energy component.
Safe Climate Australia actively sought to avoid emission generation before offsetting the remainder by minimising printed materials, selecting vegetarian foods with low food miles, and selecting other low-impact products and produce for the event.
Minimising, measuring and offsetting emissions are all part of the comprehensive pathway to confronting the climate change challenge.
