Climate Positive receives 'outstanding' ranking on independent carbon watch website
Not-for-profit carbon offset and education group Climate Positive has scored in the 90%-plus top tier of the first comprehensive and independent ranking of Australian carbon offset providers. Released today by the Total Environment Centre (TEC), Choice and the Institute of Sustainable Futures (ISF), the Carbon Offset Watch site gives Climate Positive - the only not-for-profit in the rankings - an 'outstanding' rating.
Climate Positive Chairman, Brendan Condon, welcomed the Carbon Offset Watch site and praised its role in increasing transparency and providing an independent and trusted guide to quality offsets in the Australian voluntary carbon offset sector.
"The carbon offsetting market can be confusing for businesses and consumers, so it's terrific to see Carbon Offset Watch introducing clarity and an impartial assessment of various providers and products," he said.
"Climate Positive is thrilled to be in the top band of offsetters, without factoring in some of the most valuable elements of our offer, including additional atmospheroic carbon sequesteration which takes partners 'beyond' neutrality to be 'climate positive; our significant investment in climate education; and our not-for-profit status which allows for tax deductibility of offsets."
"We congratulate the groups who have organised Carbon Offset Watch, which will continue to build confidence in the sector."
About Climate Positive
Climate Positive is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2006 to provide global warming education and provide quality offsets that go beyond carbon neutrality. It is the only tax deductible carbon offset provider participating in the survey, and is committed to sourcing carbon offsets from emission reduction projects with a renewable energy component that tackle greenhouse gases at their source.
In addition to the 52,000 tonnes of carbon offsets Climate Positive has purchased on behalf of its members, Climate Positive has given countless presentations to schools, community groups and businesses on the science and solutions to global warming. Climate Positive is also unique in that it has a "carbon debt" component, by replanting carbon rich bio-diverse forests on cleared land to take additional carbon from the atmosphere. For every tonne of carbon that Climate Positive members offset, Climate Positive undertakes 4 m2 of biologically diverse re-vegetation across four distinct vegetation communities within Victoria's forest and woodlands. So far Climate Positive has undertaken 37 hectares of "carbon debt" re-vegetation in Victoria's forest and woodland communities. This revegetation will absorb up to an additional 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over time.
